What does “peptide” actually tell me?

It is a broad name. The name gives no answer about whether a particular treatment fits your needs.

What does the word peptide mean?

In a peptide, amino acids form a short chain. Amino acids also supply the building blocks for proteins.

Insulin is a peptide, but the word covers much more than that medicine.

Ask for the exact ingredient name. A broad label such as peptide therapy leaves too much open.

Approval and product labels

What does FDA approval mean?

As of September 2026, FDA approval means a particular product was reviewed for a particular use, rather than all peptides being approved.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is the U.S. federal drug agency.

The September 2026 records show FDA-approved products for both semaglutide and tirzepatide. Ozempic and Wegovy are semaglutide products; Mounjaro and Zepbound are tirzepatide products.

The product name and its intended use still matter.

What does compounded mean?

A compounded medicine is prepared to fill an order, rather than supplied as a finished drug product.

As of September 2026, these medicines have no FDA approval. Before patients receive them, FDA does not check how safe or effective they are or review their quality.

Ask why a made-to-order version is being considered for your case.

Can making medicine to order be lawful?

Federal law, as recorded in September 2026, allows compounding when the patient is identified and has a valid prescription, provided the remaining legal conditions are met.

The law limits which ingredients can be used and when a pharmacy may make a version of a ready-made drug.

Ask which rules apply to the actual product being proposed.

What does a research label tell me?

FDA’s September 2026 page warns against weight drugs sold for human use with research labels. A label may say “not for human consumption” or describe the drug as “for research purposes”. The quality of those products is not known; they may cause harm to health.

Those label words mean the product is being described as something for research, rather than for a person to take as treatment.
